Several years ago, the news reported that Sunday to Monday we were expecting a (for Austin) significant cold event with probable freezing rain, sleet, and/or snow.

The first report was Wed.

SO, I went thru the house to verify that what I thought I had, I - in fact - did have. I told my wife about it and asked her to make a shopping list and we'd go get them. She did/we did/ we were shiney. We went to the local MegaLoMart Super store.

Sat afternoon, I went back, we needed a couple of things for the Sun Dinner. I talked with a store manager there that I know. He said - NO ONE had really been shopping.

Sun Afternoon about 2P. Wife changed mind about dessert. Sent me to store for 2 gallons of BlueBell Ice cream. Went there, saw the store, and started laughing. Saw the manager I knew. He said he'd clocked in at 2P.

ALL the checkout lines were backed up with about 4 people/carts filled full per line. He said they'd pulled all possible people who could run a checkout line up to do so.

The milk aisle was essentially bare.
The beer aisle was essentially bare.
The water aisle was essentially bare.
Except for a couple of artsy/fartsy fancy loaves of bread, the bread aisle was bare.
All the camping fuel, propane, stoves, lanterns, and a huge number of flashlight areas were bare.
The prepared meat part of the meat section was bare in areas.
The cheese/butter/bacon/eggs areas were bare in places.
A number of the shelves in the can goods aisles were bare.
Almost all of the portable electric heaters were gone.


The Manager said that the BIG RUSH started at about 1230 and by 2P most everything was gone.

He said he'd NEVER seen anything like it.

AND the funny part......... the front stalled out before it hit Texas and it didn't get below 50 degrees F.

Haters!!!

So did you end up waiting in line for 2 pails of ice cream?

No - the lines were down to one person being checked out and maybe one person waiting by then.

I got the Ice Cream and returned to my well prepared home. The store manager said it was like a storm of locusts had swarmed into the store. He said they had calls into several suppliers (Milk, bread etc) so they could get stock back in the store.

In the space of about 1 1/2 hours - SERIOUS DEPLETION of the stores stock happened.

I've seen it. We lived in GA, and we were amazed every time they said an ice storm was coming, people freaked.

Me? I'm like- honey, we have foil, rt? We have taters? Cool, dinner in the coals of the fireplace

think it's bad now? just wait till they realize those shelves won't be getting restocked.
