Post I am Learning serging
I bought a serger and a sewing machine about 3 years back, but promptly put the serger up on the shelf and starting sewing. Since I got healthier, my brain has cleared, I can read and concentrate (diagnosed diabetic and got on a better diet) I had the inspiration of learning my serger. I signed up at the store I bought my machine (The Stitchery, Howell MI), an awesome store and the teacher is just a gem! I went last night, and learned how to tie on my threads so I don't have to re-thread the machine (learning that next week), and proceeded to learn how to sew p.j. pants. I was tickled pink!
The machine ZOOMS, and it really isn't as hard as I thought it was going to be (thanks to the teacher and her great ability). She also started talking about her meat chickens being taken to the butcher this week. I was thinking (ooo, homesteader type, a sister at heart!)
Next week I learn how to make napkins and placemats, and I'm going to make a matching table mat on my own. If I can figure out how to post pictures I'll post them too!
I want to learn how to make purses and I am working on some doll clothes, I hope to get enough inventory to set up my own internet type shop, but I'm so busy with classes (bible, sewing) I have no time......not to mention canning and dehydrating.

But I'm like you girls who are talking about once the snow flies, curling up to the machines and patterns and sewing my hearts content with a nice cup of steaming tea, ................maybe I'll try a quilt this winter...................yeah......

God Bless!!! :D

I bought a sewing machinge a couple months ago. Did some stiches to check them out and then put it away. What I really want to make is diapers. So that's going to be my winter project. I'll take any advice anyone has!

Congratulations on finally taking the plunge and learning to operate your serger. I'm guilty of the same thing. I bought a serger and have NEVER used it. Now that I'm working some pretty long hours I can only hope to find the time to teach myself. I wish there were classes around here but I haven't found any yet. Best of luck!

Fishersofmen;

How is the serging going? BTW, what kind of serger did you buy? I'm going out tomorrow to buy me a new one. My older (boxed up) one is not working. I'd given it to my Mom and with her 50 + years of sewing experience she could not get it to work properly either. It was a Singer. I think I want to get the Brother 1034D. I read some reviews and it's a very good machine for the price and rated best value for the dollar by Consumer Guide. The only complaint I've read is that it's louder than most sergers. Heck, for such a tremendous savings over the others I can do loud. LOL

I still haven't found any classes here so I may be picking your brain if I get into a bind. Let us know how it's going.

Oh, I might mention that I should have watched what I wished for in my earlier post last year. I'd whined that I couldn't play with my serger because of all the hours at work. That's no longer an issue. I fell and shattered my kneecap, tore some muscles and ligaments in my left ankle,knee and elbow as well as severe whiplash in my neck. I've been off my feet since the day after Thanksgiving and to date the docs are estimating another 4-6 months before I can go back to work. I think now would be a great time to learn to serge before I lose my mind from total boredom. rrr
