The notion of government raiding personal retirement accounts for funds may seem extreme. Perhaps it shouldn't. Other governments have done it. Argentina did in 2008. Ireland has indicated it might. The worsening financial crisis may eventually move other countries in that direction.

Surely the US would never do so.

Actually, there is little basis for assuming they would not and factual evidence they would. Here are three good reasons to believe they would:

DH and I believe two things:The mortgage interest deduction will be eliminated and IRAs and 401Ks are no longer safe from the government. That's why we cashed our IRA and took a loan on our 401K and paid off the house.
As soon as the 401K loan is paid we'll take another and get solar power and a well and maybe a wood stove.
We want to eliminate as many monthly bills as we can and stock up on as many resources as we can. We're working on our garden, our yard has no soil, just clay, so we keep having to buy topsoil. Eventually I'd like a greenhouse full of earthboxes.
I just wish we could do it faster! We have to wait 4 1/2 more years for the next 401k loan.

I'm not going to give them the chance. I turn 59 1/2 in November. I'm taking a pretty sizable tax defered annuity and cashing it in 100%. I've calculated that after the taxes and interest owed to get my money completely clear, I'll take a hit of about 42%.

I'm not going to let it sit and be confiscated.

Yes, it's a matter of time before no retirement acc't will be safe.

I think the first thing they will so is put the government retirement money in a trust fund like they did social security. Then they will go after the private sector retirement accounts.

That & my life insurance policies. There've been too many scandals. Only those with money can make money. Sure some make it but it's just lika a casino - the odds favor the house!

THEY don't want us to make money, THEY WANT US DEAD!
