 End of summer ...
Putting the garden to bed this weekend, Temps in the high 80's and low 90's the past 2 months, combined with high humidity and lack of rain has left me with only tomatoes. Won't waste seed on a fall crop.
Will spend the rest of the summer hauling compost and building the soil while praying for a better year next year.
At least I beat the grasshoppers who arrived in NEOH this week en mass!

Same here with no rain and high temps. The few tomatoes I have left are coming in smaller too. I also thought about a fall crop and glad i didn't bother this year.

 Re: End of summer ...
This year I got some potatoes, zuccini, tomatoes, peas and pumpkins(which are still growing)
We started draining the pool, so I can do one last mow around the back( this has been delayed the past couple of days because of the weather and them calling for thunderstorms)
I may wash a few of the plants down and transplant them as indoor growers for the winter....washing them removes most of the bugs and larvae that are on the roots and leaves(hopefully)
My tobbaco plants never had a chance this summer, but I do have 2 for indoor growing...this variety is taking forever(but it would help if I took care of them)..lol..
given this was my first summer in this house, I am happy with what i was able to get..I had to take alot of time weeding and building the raised beds, then when the tranny went in my van, then the extra funds I had just flew out the door and preps have been put on the wayside...
Next year I plan to organize raised beds a bit better and completely fill them with soil and manure..learned my lesson about the potatoes and them needing to be hilled alot faster then I did this year to avoid green potatoes...

I don’t think it’s a matter of “is it coming.” I think that it’s already here, it’s just a matter of perspective. From one perspective, our frog friends are telling us that we should be grateful that the “spa” is hot and luxurious. From the cook’s perspective… another 10 minutes and we’ll be dinner.

 Re: End of summer ...
as always, have food for the year but not quite the variety we had hoped for. back in drought here so second planting of corn is probably a bust. only got about half the maters we had hoped for and our amaranth is going to be real low yields but other than that it hasn't been a bad year..
prayin for rain as we are about to plant fall crops. only time will tell how that will go..

 Re: End of summer ...
Mine is pretty late coming on. I planted a little later than I wanted-Memorial Day weekend. Tomatoes and green beans are doing ok. I'll dig potatoes Labor Day weekend.
Trying to figure out what I can put in now that wouldn't be too late. The first killer frost probably won't hit until the end of September or a little later so I have about 6 weeks. Thinking beets, radishes, possibly turnips. What about peas? Anything else? Thanks

 Re: End of summer ...
I'll be doing a run of lettuce when it gets cooler and always do collard greens in the fall. Christmas dinner we've had em. A few frosts brings out the flavour. Brussels sprouts too. The first pole beans got eaten off, cutworms- second try is still blooming. Too hot for my cucumbers I think, they produced very little. My tomatoes are doing fantastic still - Brandywine (upside down in hanging 5 gal pots) loved the heat and heirloom cherry tomatoes (9 ft tall now) are still heavy with fruit and will keep producing till heavy frost. I have potatoes in large planters (in half barrels- easy to hill and dig and no bugs) for the first time. Peppers just starting to get red. Squash vines taking over the back yard. Even tried a few watermelon this year, might get a couple. Southern Ontario BTW
