Post One-Third of Alabama Families Cannot Afford Food
A startling statistic about families in Alabama who cannot afford food.

A new report found a third of households in the state with children could not afford to buy food last year. That's the second highest in the nation.

In our area, 32 percent of households with children reported food hardships.

I don’t think it’s a matter of “is it coming.” I think that it’s already here, it’s just a matter of perspective. From one perspective, our frog friends are telling us that we should be grateful that the “spa” is hot and luxurious. From the cook’s perspective… another 10 minutes and we’ll be dinner.

It's probably actually worse than reported and it is going to get worse very soon!

And once again, I must promote Angel Food Ministries, both a great resource to get food for families
and a great money saver, every month.
please check it out and see how it can help you, and your food budget.

http://www.angelfoodministries.com/

Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing food relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. The program began in 1994 with 34 families in Monroe, Georgia (between Atlanta and Athens), and has grown to serve hundreds of thousands of families every month across 45 states.

There are no qualifications, minimums, income restrictions, or applications.

Everyone is encouraged to participate.

Blessings by the box

Angel Food is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. Each month's menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60. Comparison shopping has been done across the country in various communities using a wide range of retail grocery stores and has resulted in the same food items costing from between $42 and $78.

Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month. The food is all the same high quality one could purchase at a grocery store. There are no second-hand items, no damaged or out-dated goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no produce that is almost too ripe.

I had a abundance of apples , pears, tomatoes and cukes this year. I advertised them for FREE for the picking on craigslist. Not one person showed up, they wanted them picked already and asked me if I could drop them off.

I just can't understand it, when so many can't afford to eat.

I did end up picking and taking them to a senior citizen apt complex, I don't mind picking and giving to those that can't do it themselves, but I won't do it for abel body persons. Now I have some great senior friends, and I was called a week later to pick up a few pies for my family!

I have a feeling this is overstated and distorted for a particular purpose.
Not meant to the OP.

There may be a shortage of people who don't know or aren't willing to cook from "scratch"

Wife does the bulk of grocery shopping.
While we buy only sales and coupons, those with SNAP are buying carts full of better meat cuts (steak), soda at full price and lots of processed convenience food.

She also works for the local Community Action agency who runs a food bank.
I get lots of anecdotes about that.

This isn't to say there aren't tough times.
There are.

But there's a lot of help out there
