Although I have been a "prepper" for over 20 years, I am totally self-taught, and have never learned some things that you all take for granted. For instance, I rely mostly on canned foods and rice. I recently added bags of powdered refried beans, which I like a lot. But there are many holes in my knowledge, and I want to plug them one at a time. One thing I want to know is- what about corn meal ? I want to make cornbread and quit using the small individual packages that are much more expensive. Is cornmeal what I want ? What quantities is it available in ? Can I get it without paying for high shipping costs ?

They have corn meal with the flour in the grocery store in five lb bags, I've bought that and put it in buckets myself, and you can buy long term corn meal in buckets. I also bought some 50 lb bags of grits from www.honeyvillegrain.com or you can buy dried corn and grind it to corn meal., for very long term storage. If you grind grits, you get masa flour for making tortillas, plus my kids just love grits, with cheese and butter.
Corn meal doesn't always store well, but mine is still OK. Just keep it very dry, and as cool as possible. I've got those bags of dessicant hanging around in the basement. I change them out when the bag fills with water.
Freeze the corn meal first to kill the bugs, that helps.

War, If you are going ot keep it in storage for more then 2 years, go towards buying some 50 pound bags of popcorn to grind into cornmeal. Sam's Club sells them for around $16.58 each
I have a great recipe for cornbread using a can of creamed corn, the bread comes out so moist and yummy. Will have to post it for you.

Most affordable places to buy 5 pound bags of cornmeal is Wal-mart and aldi's
