I love mullein, and encourage it to grow. Here is the story I heard about the ancient use for this herb: It was once also called "boneset" (bone set) ...it's leaves are large and very mucus-y. In ancient times, (supposedly) the Romans would use the leaves as a temporary "bone set" (or cast) for broken bones on the battle field. Mash the leaves into a paste, apply to the limb, then wrap with a bruised leaf. It should form a some what hard encasement enabling you to move the patient without additional harm. Though I do not condone medical treatment without knowledge, this cold come in handy in an emergency situation when there is no dr around.

mullein is a good cough syrup, just take the leaves, place in pot cover with water and simmer, strain and add honey or sugar to sweeten and can in canning jars.
the yellow flowers are good for ear aches, pick flowers and place in a clear bottle with olive oil, set in sun for 2 weeks, drop by dropper a drop or two into ear.

Alone or mixed with other herbs as a tea for chest congestion. The whole plant as a tea to calm down wild, angry, nervous, agitated people to mellow them out.
A blend of mullein, lobelia and a couple other herbs can be smoked or made into tea for allergies or asthma.
Mullein makes the best toilet paper, big soft fuzzy leaves.... plant profusely around the outhouse. Shred mullein leaves, simmer lightly, then mull in cocoa butter overnight. Strain, cool and form into suppositories for the best hemroid treatment available.
