It must be spring..I don't know about anyone else but everything seems to be happening this year...

food prices are going crazy, so I have been busy getting the gardens ready while the weather is decent and the black flies are'nt out yet...

I still hvae my house listed and I am still planning on moving..economy is so bad up here right now, that for every 15 houses listed only one is selling...

So happy May everyone..April showers should be over and May flowers begin...

I don’t think it’s a matter of “is it coming.” I think that it’s already here, it’s just a matter of perspective. From one perspective, our frog friends are telling us that we should be grateful that the “spa” is hot and luxurious. From the cook’s perspective… another 10 minutes and we’ll be dinner.

It's too hot to can or dehydrate. Waaaaaaaay too hot. I guess the only prepping I can do is keep working on the garden.
I did have a flat tire last week, we worked on it yesterday and I bought some stuff called "Slime" and we put it in the tire and then DH re-inflated it and drove it around and so far it seems to be fine. That might be a good prep item, but it's $9 a bottle!

Slime is a terrific stuff, you will probable have no more problem with your tire.
I keep a bottle around in case it is needed, esp. for use in mower and yard machines.
It will stay liquid form and seal any future smallish leaks.
It's a cheap fix, as the cost to drive to town here is way up cause of gas prices, appx.
4$ round trip.
The cost to dismount a tire, repair it, balance it and remount here is around
20$
Also note the measuring lines on the bottle, there are different amounts to put in based on the size of the tire.
But you probably knew that.
Please send some heat up this way, we are freezing up here, and have had 13 inches of rain in April. &&

Post Re: May 2011
Thank you for the good wishes, we here in the
Ohio river valley have been drenched with 13 inches of rain in April
alone.
This on top of a severe drought that lasted through November of last year.
Many trees will be killed from the abuse.
My DW has been looking for rain barrels to have fill from runoff from newly roofed barn, (40x60ft.)
We finally bought 2 from a catalogue we got in the mail.

Rain Barrels
Collapsible Rain Barrel offers water-saving convenience in a portable design.

http://www.improvementscatalog.com/prod ... barrels.do
The barrels are made of fabric, and fold up for storage.

Also, I finally wore out my grannys pressure cooker this winter, It was originally bought in the mid-1950's and I replaced it with this:

http://www.redhillgeneralstore.com/hous ... A41082.htm
It is just a cooker, not a canner, and I have my Grannys canner that was made in the 1920's.

As it has no gasket, but instead has a metal to metal angled sealing system .
It resembles this one, and I don't know how you would ever wear it out.

http://www.redhillgeneralstore.com/hous ... A59058.htm
Also a new Ball Blue Book of canning and preserving.
Now we are shopping for a flour mill/meat grinder as I would prefer to grind my own foods, so we will know what is in them. This is the one we are looking at:

FGM Hand Base, Grain Mill plus 3 Attachments

FGM Hand Base, Grain Mill plus 3 Attachments
Please post if you have any reviews of other common mills.

Yesterday when I went out to get a few things..I found some Tylenol Cold gel caps on sale for 1.60 a box, these are regularly 15.98 a box of 40..I have been fighting this cold/sinus bug for most of this winter and for the 1.60 I figured I would give these gel caps a try( I have used the niquil type before and they have worked great)..

They had 6 boxs, so I bought all 6 ( would have cost me over 100.00, but they cost me 9.22) and woot they work...

I can breath better this morning and I finally got a good night sleep...whatever I have is in the upper sinus cavity and anything I tried from an antibiotic to halls was not working...

So I am glad I boght all they had, I am prepped up on some half decent sinus meds now

Easter chocolate is going for 15 cents on the dollar right now. $10 boxes of nice stuff for $1.50.
My daughter has the prepping mentality, simply seeing the logic of it. Not bad for a 16 year old.

Heading for the BOL today. Near Mount Forest Ont.
Planted 2 Paw Paw a week ago, some onions. Two apple trees, persimmon and some groundnut this time.
Maybe look for some fiddleheads, cattail shoots if I have time.
Bringing back some cedar logs I cut and de-barked last year for a raised bed.

Does anyone have any knowledge about, or opinions about the quality or
ease of use of hand grain grinders they may have or have used?

We are considering this one
The Family Grain Mill:
