 Gardening 2011
woohoo we got hit with snow again this morning....about 3 inches, but thats not going to stop me...
I have some small potatoes from my garden last year and they look ready to plant, so today I am going to get a couple bags of soil and start this years potatoes as potatoes in a bag, then transplant them outside when it warms up...I saved all of my soil bags last spring when I filled the raised beds...so I should get a few dozen planted to start with...

I don’t think it’s a matter of “is it coming.” I think that it’s already here, it’s just a matter of perspective. From one perspective, our frog friends are telling us that we should be grateful that the “spa” is hot and luxurious. From the cook’s perspective… another 10 minutes and we’ll be dinner.

 Re: Gardening 2011
Good thinking. I'm going to do sweet potatoes this year. Forgot to get a couple shopping yesterday to get started. I hear the greens are commonly eaten around the world. +10 here today, I'm going to pull the row cover/cold frame off of one 2x12 section of garden, plant peas, beets, onions and carrots.
Put the cold frame back on and hope they survive the next month. Snow tomorrow.....

 Re: Gardening 2011
Right now we have a little too much water in the garden. As soon as I can dig, I'm going to be turning everything and raking some of the dirt into the areas that will have spring crops to raise those sections up. The areas I "steal" my soil from will get filled back in with half-composted manure. I'll put my spring oats in there to pull up the nitrogen that I'd lose otherwise.
I'm getting everything ready for my onion order from Dixondale. We ordered 6 or 7 different types, which is far more than we need for ourselves. We are sharing with my in-laws once we harvest. I'm also putting in about 50' of snap peas and 50' of snow peas once the water drains from our last storm. I'm putting in far more radishes than we could eat as roots because I really like stir-frying the young seed pods. The bees love these too, so I don't mind giving them some space. The other roots and greens will go in next month.
I've got all my coles going in the cold frames, and I'm getting tomatoes and peppers going in the house. I think I have 25 types of tomatoes, but I'm only growing one or two of each slicing or cherry variety. Most of what I am planting are paste or whole-canning types. The peppers are a nice mix of sweet and hot types. I'm growing an absolutely obscene amount of okra for someone north of the Mason-Dixon too.
That's it for now, but it's enough to keep me very busy.

 Re: Gardening 2011
Forgive my ignorance - what are cole crops? We got a lot of snow, 8" on top of my cold frames. Going up to the +temps next week. I'm hoping for the best. When I was digging I saw my sorrel and garlic are green and pushing up hard through the mulch.

 Re: Gardening 2011
cole crops would be early or cool crops, think cole slaw.. cabbage, carrots, salad greens, broccoli, turnips, radishes, potatoes, pretty much all root crops and frost tolerant veggies are considered cole crops..

 Re: Gardening 2011
Thanks, never heard that term before. At first I thought it was a typo of "cold" but the post above yours also used it.

I use coles when I'm talking about brassicas. Maybe it's a regional term, like cantaloupe/muskmelon/mushmelon?

 Re: Gardening 2011
I'm itching to turn some dirt. Just got new shares for my plows but it's still a little too early. I may turn a few furrows just to get some peas and lettuce in pretty soon. Real plowing won't take place for 3 weeks or more. But getting ready to start seeds.
Things like tomatoes won't go in ground until the third week in May. Still some risk of frost but small by then.
I'm going to try and get some underground stuff like potatoes and beans in the week before
