Post Return of Free Knitting Patterns
Well, I have found a site that also has The Knitting Pattern of the Day, so I guess the idea is not very original, but I'm going to try and keep this going anyway. I'm not competing with this wonderful blog that is doing pretty much what I'm doing only better. You can visit this great site at http://www.dailyknitter.com

I will post a few of the interesting patterns I found there in the next few posts. Like my posts here, the site links to other sites. Adding a new pattern or two every day.

Post Simple Santa Hat
*This is from a site called Knit Gansta you can reach them directly at http://knitgangsta.blogspot.com

Santa Claus is coming to town!

Holidays are right around the corner!

And if you're a knitter, you know what that means... Time to knit presents!

This year, I wanted to make something easy and quick enough to make several in time for Christmas. What I came up with is this:

Image

An awesome Santa Hat!!!

And my Christmas present to all of you in cyberspace is this free Santa Hat pattern! Yay!

Materials:
-Yarn
A: 1 ball of white eyelash yarn (I used Paton's Cha Cha in color White)
B: 1 skein of white worsted weight yarn (I used Red Heart Super Saver in color White)
C: 1 skein of red worsted weight yarn (I used Caron Simply Soft in color Autumn Red)
- US 11 straight knitting needles, or size needed to obtain gauge
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Pom-pom maker (store-bought or home-made, doesn't matter. See this website for instructions, if you need them)
Image
Gauge: in st st with two strands of C held together - 11 st and 14 rows = 4"

Hat:
With two strands of A and one strand of B held together, CO 48 st

Rows 1-7: work in garter st (k all rows)

Rows 8: With two strands of C held together, k across

Rows 9-23 , work in st st. You should end with a purl row.

Row 24: k1, k2tog, *k 6, k2tog, repeat from * 4 more times, k5 (42 st)

Row 25: purl

Row 26: knit

Row 27: purl

Row 28: k1, k2tog, *k5, k2tog, repeat from * 4 more times, k4 (36 st)

Rows 29-31: Repeat rows 25-27

Row 32: k1, k2tog, *k4, k2tog, repeat from * 4 more times, k3 (30 st)

Rows 33-35: Repeat rows 25-27

Row 36: k1, k2tog, *k3, k2tog, repeat from * 4 more times, k2 (24 st)

Rows 37-39: Repeat rows 25-27

Row 40: k1, k2tog, *k2, k2tog, repeat from * 4 more times, k1 (18 st)

Rows 41-43: Repeat rows 25-27

Row 44: *k1, k2tog, repeat from * 5 more times (12 st)

Rows 45-47: Repeat rows 25-27

Row 48: k2tog across (6 st)

Row 49: purl

Row 50: knit

Cut yarn, leaving a really long tail. Thread yarn through all remaining stitches and pull closed.

Finishing:

Use tail of yarn to sew up the back of the hat. Make a pom-pom about 2" in diameter, and attach to the point of the hat. Weave in all ends. Wear and enjoy, or give as a gift!

Post Round Ornament
Well, it is good to see that while that Crystal Palace Yarns still lives, long after the wonderful shop in Oakland, where I used to buy them has closed. They yet live in cyber space and have free patterns. This one looks simple and would be nice on a tree, would work for odd bits of yarn, even homespun.

Crystal Palace Yarns
Free pattern for Holiday Ornament

Merino 5 or Fjord Holiday Ornament

Image
Designed & Knit by Radka Chamberlain

Materials:
1 - 50 g ball Merino 5 or Fjord, red (CC);
1 – 50 g ball Merino 5 or Fjord, white (MC).
[3 ornaments can be made with 2 balls of yarn]
Red & white model shown was knit with red and white Fjord, green and white was knit with Merino 5.
Crystal Palace Bamboo Double Point needles, US 6.
Large eyed tapestry needle or crochet hook; material for stuffing (polyester fiberfill, yarn leftovers); hanging loop (ribbon or yarn braid).

Gauge: 6 sts per inch (24 sts/10 cm) over St st.
Size: 3.5 in high by 3.5 in wide

Abbreviations:
CC – contrasting color; CO- cast on; dpn- double pointed needles; K- Knit; K2tog - knit 2 sts together; MC- main color; P- Purl; rep - repeat; St st - stockinette stitch; YO - yarn over; PSSO - pass slip st over; rnd(s) - round(s); st(s)- stitch(es); tog - together.

Instructions
First half
CO 60 sts in main color (MC). Join to work in round.
Follow either the line-by-line written instructions below, or the chart shown.

Ornament Chart & Legend
ImageImage

Editor’s note: in using charts, begin at bottom right corner, (Rnd 1, st 1) and work across to bottom left corner, then repeat over your total sts for first rnd. This assumes that working needle is to right, and needle TO be worked is on the left.
The chart shows what to do as you work across from right to left.
Now proceed to the Rnd 2, etc.
A helpful trick is to put a sticky note covering up the rows above the one you are doing.
This means you look only at the row you are working now, and the one below. This also helps to check your sts. For example, the chart shows a red st as the 1st st of row 5 – which was a white st as the 1st st of row 4. Once you become familiar with charts, they’re far easier to use than the words as the colors show you what’s next!

Written Out Instructions
Rnd 0 : *(K10, place marker), repeat across.
Rnd 1: *(K2-MC, K1-CC, K2-MC, K1-CC, K3-MC, K1-CC)* repeat between ** 6 times.

Rnd 13: *(K2-MC, K2tog-CC)* repeat between ** 6 times.
Rnd 14: *(K1-MC, K2tog-CC)* repeat between ** 6 times.

[Perhaps, reverse colors from first half, as shown in Merino 5 green/white version]
Turn work so CO edge is up. With CC, pick up 60 sts in Rnd 0. To line up pattern, first st picked up should be in st to left of a dec line. Join to work in round.
Repeat Rnds 1-14 as for first half. Cut yarn, leaving tails of about 8”.
Pass CC tail through all stitches on needles as if to purl. Stuff ball to desired shape.

Post Home Made Knitted Bags for Wrapping Gifts In
This one comes with a post from the creator granting permission to use it for you own use and charity knitting, but please do not produce for sale. Since the design is simple, an experienced knitter should be able to modify the idea and create their own bags if they need to put some up in their Esty or E-bay store. I used a different pattern for many gifts this year as did a friend of mine. The patterns you can use are endless, my husband got an early Yule gift of a similar knit bag with Cathulu's knitted across the top! Kitties, doggies, teddy bears and snow flakes may be more traditional, or just use up bits of left over colored yarn.

I thought this was a really great idea for the prep household, as you can re-use the bags and use up yarn at the same time (and not waste as much money on wrapping paper).

Post Site with dozens of patterns
This site is one my mother sent to me, you need to give them your e-mail but then you get dozens of free patterns. Sewing and other fiber crafts too. While most of the sweater patterns are flat (I prefer knitting in the round) many are lovely and simple. You can also download some of them as free "e-books" PDF for easier use off line.

You can reach the site at:
http://www.favecrafts.com/

My favorite pattern was probably the baby layette pattern, which I'd say is medium level and looks really nice in the pictures.

www.ravelry.com is a great resource for knitters and crocheters. It's free to use, has tons of patterns both free and otherwise, for just about anything you can think of to knit or crochet. There are lots of discussion groups and you can look at what other people have made.

Than you for the link, crochet is a dying art here in the UK, so I am always happy to find free paterns.

I'll try and get this thread going again, but I may have to do links instead of the full patterns, unless members have some patterns of their own they would like to post (or from their family etc).

The copy right issue thing is playing havoc with this sort of sharing...Also, it is getting close to the time of year when knitting becomes very popular again. Some of us knit all year to some degree, but many more people knit in the Fall and Winter. I just started my first socks for the next Winter Season, August means Fall is just around the corner.

I love this sites patterns for the various alphabet letters. I've taken these which are in dishcloth size and added to them to make personalized throw pillows for my friends and family this Christmas.

I posted this on the sock thread, but I'm also going to put it here with the free patterns. This is a wonderful first sock pattern (there are many versions of this) and the same stitch pattern makes a great hat as well. Because there is no heal, you can make socks even if you only know how to knit and pearl.

The Purple Kitty site has many other free patterns (including the cabled knee socks I'm making for myself right now).

Anyone have a pattern for a knitted lion? I have a Leo the Lion who is over 40 years old; he was knitted by a lady in the U.K. He is about 6-8 inches long. I dID come across a pattern for a knitted lion, but it was much bigger...

Post Re: FREE knitting patterns and links thread
There are several knitted patterns for simple cats on line, mostly from the 1960's or revised later; since they can also make a bear by changing the ears, I would expect you could transform them into a Lion by adding a mane, editing the facial decorations and adding a long tube and pompom for a lion tail. I don't have the pattern to hand at the moment, but I'll try and look for it, I know there are a number of versions out there. The Cat looks to be a medium sized toy (think teddy bear), similar to the old sock monkeys. I keep meaning to make one but have never gotten around to it.

But it should be pretty easy to modify, a tiger would be a bit trickier because you would need to add stripes, and a Lynx would need to have fluffy ears and feet, but when it comes down to it, they are all cats and with knitting you just need a basic shape (in this case two round balls for head and body, plus either knitted or stitched on paws and a tail.

Hope that helps, more later - DC
