CDC issues warning as swine flu strikes states
Federal and state health officials say a new swine flu strain recently sickened two preschool age children in Pennsylvania and Indiana, noting that the cases seem to be isolated.
Reports note that the latest outbreak is related to the H1N1 swine flu, which caused a global pandemic two years ago.
The reports come as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourage Americans to get the flu vaccine as soon as possible. Although the flu season peaks across the nation around late January or early February, it does not hurt to get the shot earlier.
“Today’s report is reassuring because it means that most parents are protecting their young children from diseases that can cause widespread and sometimes severe harm,” said Anne Schuchat, M.D., director of CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. We recommend vaccinations because they are one of the most effective, safest ways to keep children healthy.”
This year’s flu vaccine protects against the same strains as last year’s, leading some people who received the vaccine last year to skip the flu vaccine this year. Physicians are not recommending this strategy because skipping the flu vaccine is not worth the risk for some people.
