Post Canning question ...
I have a ceramic top stove with burners "with a brain". Not good for canning because of weight and variable temps.

Any ideas for alternate heat sources for canning, other than a new range?

I used to spend summers canning with my grandmother, and have all her recipes.

Much quicker to heat up water and keeps the heat out of the house!

The only way to can!

Not to contradict Navaho, but I can't can on 2 burners. If you are canning tomatoes, you need a burner for the tomatoes a burner for the lids and a burner for the jars. I would find an old kitchen gas stove and hook it up top propane or natural gas. If you go with a two burner stove then you need someway to get the third burner.

I've done canning on a two burner portable stove...but I had to heat my lids on my regular stove. One burner to keep the jars in the canner heated and one for the product I am preparing to can. If your grill has a gas side burner, you could use that for some of it...probably the canner and use your stove for the rest.

We use a model similar to this except it does not have the side wings,

We do all of our canning outside, so we do not overheat the house' especially when running those 30 qt All Amercan Pressure Canners.

We also use it for cooking when we lose power, and the initial thought when we purchased it was for use for "emergency's", grid down and TEOTWAWKI.

If you purchase a "camp" stove, just make sure that you stock up on propane bottles......we have both 20# and 100#.
You can sometimes find 100# bottles on craigslist or your local paper. I'm always on the lookout for them, 'cause I do not believe that you can have too many. And keep 'em filled, you can store propane forever, with out any bad effects.
