Briton killed and wife kidnapped at Kenyan beach resort

Armed raiders have killed a British man and kidnapped his wife at a beach resort in Kenya, it emerged today.

The gang attacked the couple overnight on Saturday at their luxury hotel at the Kiwayu Safari Village resort about 30 miles north of the island of Lamu near the Somali border.

Officials today confirmed the country's police were investigating the incident.

Meanwhile the Foreign Office published details of the attack on a travel advisory note on its website.

The warning said: "Two British citizens were attacked on 11 September at a beach resort north of Lamu, near the Kenya-Somalia border.

"One was killed and another kidnapped. We continue to advise against all but essential travel to within 30 km of Kenya's border with Somalia."

It was unclear if the attackers came from neighbouring Somalia, where pirates often prey on foreigners, or if they were Kenyans.

Kenyan police did not return calls seeking comment. There was no answer from the resort, which consists of 18 luxury cottages spread along a private beach.

Attacks on tourists are unusual in Kenya, which is popular for its safari vacations and pristine beaches.

Officials indicated it was possible the raiders had targeted the couple's hotel after entering Kenya from Somalia.

The region of the country where the incident happened is off the usual tourist trail and considered to be particularly dangerous.
