Post Anybody grow coffee plants?
Image

I had a good crop going, lasted 9 years and I did pretty well with it. Last winter I had kittens in the house and they killed my coffee plants. The ones shown here are a new round of plants and apparently I have lost the coffee plant touch or something, these are all of the sudden doing terrible and i can't figure out what's going on with them. first I thought they were too dry, then too wet, then I thought they might be sunburned, then cold chilled from the draft off the windows, now I don't have a freakin clue. Any suggestions?

no clue! I got two coffee plants, and they got stressed and died. They looked like the above just before they croaked for good.
I hear that Vermont's Green Mountain Roasters have started a coffee plantation in Vermont!
If you figure out what's gone wrong, let us know.

I'm going to mist them for a few days, see if that helps. I'm also going to pull that terrarium, heater out and put it under them. It's way huge, fits under a 55 gallon fish tank, so I have to figure out where to put in where the cats wont lay on it and wreck the plants.

didn't think of that. But the poor looking buggers will have to wait until one of us here becomes employed because I don't have a source to give them to try it.

It looks like one of your little kitties has used your coffee plant dirt as their littery box...

If cat urine has gotten into the soil even a small unnoticble amount. each time you water the plant the urine will be released with it..

Last resort is to dig up the plant rinse off and trim back the roots....and re-plant into a new planter in new soil put some type of barrier so kitties cannot get at the plant

Thats my thinkin anyways..I use to have a cat that loved my plants( yup they all died) and when I plant my outdoor gardens this year I will have to figure out some type of kitty cover

I don’t think it’s a matter of “is it coming.” I think that it’s already here, it’s just a matter of perspective. From one perspective, our frog friends are telling us that we should be grateful that the “spa” is hot and luxurious. From the cook’s perspective… another 10 minutes and we’ll be dinner.

nope, that wasn't it. It was determined that the 3 small drain holes in the bucket were not good enough, the coffee plants died from root rot. Coffee hates it's feet wet. Guess I shoulda used the original container I had been growing on for the second round.....

So, that's what coffee looks like when it's too wet.

Maybe the soil needs to be more acidic?

I have an Arabica plant. I water mine with aquarium water. Since you have to replace the aquarium water why not recycle it and water the plants with it. The fish make fine deposits in the water that plants seem to love. I have a jungle in my living room. My aloe plants are ginormous and they get watered from the aquarium too.

I'm gonna go again with my seeds I still have come spring. I will be more careful with the drainage this time. I still have plenty of roasted beans from my last crop harvests but since it take so long to get a harvest, I better get going with new plants.
