Americans are Canada’s new economic refugees
For as long as anyone can recall, Americans have poked fun at Canada and Canadians for everything from our love of hockey and beer to the colour of our money. So how come an increasing number of our southern friends have been leaving the States and moving to the Great White North in recent years?

For starters, unemployment is no laughing matter. Thus the jittery state of the U.S. economy is driving more of its citizens to seek better prospects here, according to a GlobalPost story that's gaining traction. This surge of stateside economic refugees has seen the number of Americans applying for temporary work visas double between 2008 and 2010, according to Canadian officials.

While that sounds impressive in reality the number of U.S. citizens working in Canada is, at least by global migration standards and according to CNN, relatively small with an estimated 30,000 Americans working here at the beginning of 2010.

However it's not just job seekers. Call it a reversed brain drain if you like, as American students too are reportedly flocking to Canuck post-secondary institutions because of the significantly lower cost of tuition.

I don’t think it’s a matter of “is it coming.” I think that it’s already here, it’s just a matter of perspective. From one perspective, our frog friends are telling us that we should be grateful that the “spa” is hot and luxurious. From the cook’s perspective… another 10 minutes and we’ll be dinner.

What is needed up there is a slightly warmer climate, then you would have to beat us off with clubs.
